How to check an Android app’s developer and package name

By RummyAd editorial · Published Nov 7, 2026 · Updated Nov 7, 2026

Two Android apps can show similar names. A useful identity record combines the name with the developer, application ID and the page where you found it. Keep these facts separate rather than copying the title into every field.

Start with the publisher’s source

Find the developer’s own website or the store page it links to. Record the publisher name exactly as shown, the source URL and the date you checked it. If an app only appears on an unrelated download page, say that the publisher has not been confirmed.

Compare the Android application ID

Android’s documentation explains that an application ID identifies an app on a device and in Google Play. It commonly looks like a dot-separated package name. On a Google Play listing, inspect the value following id= in the URL. Compare it with the package information supplied by the developer or your existing record.

A matching string is one part of the comparison. A filename, screenshot or copied application ID is not by itself proof that an APK came from the publisher.

Keep a short evidence record

  • Exact display name and known aliases.
  • Developer or publisher as listed by the source.
  • Application ID, with its source rather than an inferred value.
  • Version and date observed.
  • Any unresolved mismatch, including different publishers using similar names.

When information does not match

Do not merge records merely because two apps share a name. Keep the uncertain field blank or marked unconfirmed, review the source again, and withhold a download link until the intended destination has been checked. These checks help describe identity; they do not certify the software.
